„Modern Library: Tasks, Values and Its Role in Society“ (07.05.26, 10:00-11:30 Uhr)
What is a modern library in an age defined by digital acceleration, information disorder, and shifting social trust? This presentation explores the evolving mission of libraries beyond their traditional custodial functions, positioning them as critical infrastructures of knowledge, memory, and democratic resilience. It will examine how contemporary libraries balance enduring professional values – intellectual freedom, preservation, and public service – with emerging responsibilities in digital transformation, AI integration, media literacy, and knowledge security.
Drawing on recent institutional practice and broader European developments, the talk highlights the library’s role as a mediator between heritage and innovation, analogue and digital, individual learning and collective cultural memory. Particular attention is given to libraries as trusted civic spaces: safeguarding documentary heritage, fostering critical thinking, enabling societal resilience. The presentation argues that the modern library is not merely adapting to change but actively shaping society’s capacity to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and technological disruption.
